Description

Tracey Ullman Show Simpsons cels featuring the whole family are very rare, so I was happy to get this one. The background it came with was not correct. I reached out to Wes Archer, who directed the original short to see if he would be willing to recreate the background, and he said yes. Just to explain how early Simpsons backgrounds differed from many other animated shows, the Simpsons backgrounds were printed on cels and some or all of the solid background colors were usually sheets of construction paper. In this case, the cream wall is construction paper. It was his first time painting on a real cel in decades.

Great piece as it was the start of animation that spoke to the modern family unit and changed the culture of America from an upstart fourth broadcast network. The insight into the process of the backgrounds is very informative as this time period bridged traditional and modern computer animation.
