Description
Ernest Ratcliff began his career in the early 1930s, working as a commercial artist doing magazine illustrations. His earliest work appears to have been for Nash's--Pall Mall Magazine (1933-1937). During then did occasional illustrations for Strand Magazine, where he regularly illustrated Agatha Christie's The Labours of Hercules stories from November 1939 to September 1940. During this period, his illustrations were also published in Britannia and Eve and The Windsor Magazine. From the start of the fifties, he illustrated stories for Woman's Own and Home Notes.

For over a decade, from about 1957 to 1969, Radcliff drew many romance comics for Valentine (Fleetway). He also drew at least one episode of Rick Random (The Mystery of the Knights of Space) in Super Detective #139 (November 1958) and other UK comics. He drew a 'Danger Man' strip for the 1967 Ranger Book.

Ratcliff drew several newspaper strips for the UK press, but only 'Lindy' was clearly identified as being his work. He reportedly drew the daily for the London Evening News \from 9/3/1959-~1965). 'Lindy' was also published in the French paper Paris-Jour.

In the 1970s, Ratcliff illustrated children's books, including an edition of Robin Hood and children's story papers such as Once Upon a Time (Magda the Snowmaiden, Doctor Livingstone meets Henry Stanley).

Lindy is a buxom young girl living in 1960s England who ends up in funny situations as she searches for romance and adventure. The example shown here shows Lindy in an outrigger with a male companion. A storm came up, tossing their boat toward a reef when she is suddenly thrown overboard.

The strip was produced in ink and blue pencil over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 14.25" x 4.25" on a larger piece of 2-ply Bristol. The art is not signed but Ratcliff's name is on the title stat. The art is in Very Good condition, with light overall toning, and handling wear.

As usual with me, shipping is not included in the price and must be paid by the buyer. I prefer checks or money orders. If you need to use PayPal, I need payment sent as a "gift" or via "Friends and Family". I apologize in advance if that is an inconvenience,

I have been asked if I will ship to Europe... I will, but it is expensive and if you need to use PayPal for an international transaction I warn that PayPal requires items of this value to be sent express (to get a signature) and insured (which declares the value for VAT). Just so you are aware.
