Description

First appearance of Axa!

Axa was a post-apocalyptic comic strip that ran in The Sun in the UK from 1978-1985, and before its cancellation was being published in multiple newspapers around the world.

Before Axa, Enric was famous for working on the Modesty Blaise comic strip for eight years, which he took over in 1970 after the sudden passing of Jim Holdaway. Enric was a fan of science fiction, and he had always wanted to do a story set in the future.

He created the concept and background of Axa, which took place in 2080 with a society of people living in The Domed City to protect themselves from the Great Contamination, which had occurred years earlier. Axa is young and brash and does not want the protection of the dome but instead wants to go outside the dome and explore the world. The strip involves Axa's journey outside the dome, and the people and things that she discovers along the way. The Sun accepted Enric's proposal and hired Donne Avenell to work with Romero and write the strip.

The story was originally printed in English, but Enric put Spanish paste-ups on the art when it was reprinted in Spanish. I did not want to take them off the original art, so I provided translations below.

The year is 2080.
"Axa, stop! Don't be a fool!"
"I'm leaving the Domed City! Get out of my way, Jon!"
"No! I won't let you do this!"

Lovely! The opening shot of the sci-fi setting and then followed up with an immediate shot of the space girl!
