Description

The creator of BIG BEN BOLT and the longtime artist of Prince Valiant came to strip-cartooning after establishing himself as a magazine and newspaper illustrator, and he brought a stylishness of draftmanship and composition.

Murphy drew, or oversaw the drawing of BIG BEN BOLT for over a quarter of a century from its inception in 1950 till its last appearance in 1978. In 1971 he took over PRINCE VALIANT from
Hal Foster . Murphy's sense of design and control of his medium have earned him wide honors in the profession. He has won the National Cartoonists Society's silver plaque for the Best Story
Strip of the year six times-for both BIG BEN BOLT and Prince Valiant. When Elliot Caplin of King Features Syndicate approached Murphy to draw the strip in 1949, Murphy was already a well known sports illustrator.

John Cullen Murphy was born in New York City and raised in Chicago, where he attended the Art Institute at the age of nine. In 1930, he attended the Grand Cental Art School, the Phoenix Art Institute, and the Art Students League and came to know magazine artist Norman Rockwell, who was a neighbor and used the frecklefaced youngster as a model.

This strip would be a wonderful addition for any serious comic strip collector. In my over 35 years of collecting, I haven't seen many of BIG BEN BOLT originals on the market. For a more complete biography of the strip see The Encyclopedia Of AMERICAN COMICS.
