DescriptionThe Grumman XF5F Skyrocket was a prototype twin-engined shipboard fighter interceptor. The Navy ordered one prototype, on 30 June 1938. The aircraft had a unique appearance: The forward "nose" of the fuselage did not extend forward of the wing. Provisions were included for two 20 mm (0.787 in) Madsen cannon as armament. Why it was chosen as the plane the Blackhawks flew during WWII is unknown to me but it had a striking design. This page is from early in Crandall's tenure on the Blackhawks and has a great panel of the Skyrocket. I have read several accounts of how racist Blackhawk was during this period and that is clearly depicted in this page with the exaggerated features of Stan and Chop Chop as well as the way the dialog is written to try to capture accents.
