DescriptionIllustrating the short story by James E. Gunn in the September 1951 issue of Future Science Fiction. For a Lowndes book, this issue has an impressive lineup, including James Blish, H. Beam Piper and Arthur C. Clarke's classic "If I Forget Thee, Oh Earth."Henry William Kiemle, Jr., a son of German immigrants, was a fairly prolific pulp illustrator, predominately producing interior illos for books ranging from Six-Gun Western to G-8 & His Battle Aces over the period from the late 1920s to the mid-50s. His style is pleasing if innocent. The characters here, particularly the young lady, remind me rather weirdly of those in Joe Shuster's B&D art. Social/Sharing |

Women resting on street posts seem to be a big city trope that even extends to the sci-fi fantasy illustration genre. I like the Roman style setting and fashions just for the stabby guy to come out like he's going to kill Julius Caesar.
