One would think the mustard gass would linger killing any rodents milling about waiting for their next meal.  Now flies and worms, they'd feed on this environment of rotting flesh and crimson masks.  Loving the picture that Mutti paints.

Stunning page! It captures a striking juxtaposition of grim reality and dark humor. On the one hand, the phrase “At least the rats are gone” offers a bizarre sense of relief amid the devastation of war. While on the other hand, Mutti’s brushwork masterfully conveys both the horrors of the battlefield and the unsettling and seemingly supernatural elements of the story. Great stuff.
