DescriptionAn interstellar-sized piece that expertly leverages Frank Cho’s otherworldly crosshatching skills to capture the glory of the moon and cosmos at almost 1:1 scale. At a whopping 14x22, this thing has its own gravitational field. (I certainly can’t seem to pull myself away from it….)A super fun title page that forgoes a traditional team shot in favor of a phenomenally-rendered Starlord (who’s obviously looking to keep pace with The Cow, as he effortlessly leaps over a lunar object of his own) along with a wheatcake stack of other Guardians. And while this isn’t the type of “moon” one might normally expect to find on a Frank Cho piece, I’ll allow it. :) The motion lines on Starlord’s coat and pants (the details on his gun grip and boot jets), the dash of brush work on Gamora’s hair, Rocket’s scowl (and Groot’s delighted grin), Captain Marvel’s power, beauty, and confidence (along with a host of other great details on the heroes)… just awesome. But even so, everything pales in contrast to the moon and background. The stark white underlighting coupled with the use of small, fine penstrokes and layers of markers and wash to create the lunar texture and celestial lighting, all floating in the inky black soup of the universe (peppered with dollops of stars and streaks of nebulae)… it’s just FANTASTIC. It’s a modern piece that adheres to the winning recipe set down by so many of the masters of classic fantasy and sci-fi art: a rich and potent investment of time, technique, and talent to create an astonishing piece. It’s a brilliant reminder that it’s just plain -fun- to see a Frank Cho artistic flex. So if it’s possible to be simultaneously over the moon about a piece - and at the same time NOWHERE NEAR having gotten over The Moon on this piece (and the lengths to which Frank went to draft this gorgeous love-letter to the EC and Famous Funnies sci-fi comics of the 50’s) - that’s right where I’m at. Third star to the left and straight on ‘til morning! Social/Sharing |

As always, a splendid write-up that draws attention to what's noteworthy about the piece! Wish more folks would follow your example (myself included).

Totally agree, sort of. While that background truly does make the piece, I just can't stop drooling over all that gorgeous linework on Starlord. But of course the best way is to just take this all in as a whole. Congrats on a beautiful, beautiful, page.

As usual, your excellently written description leaves me at a loss for words. Thankfully, I was fortunate enough to see this and chat about it with you privately already, so I don't feel so bad about the fact that I won't regurgitate whatever I previously said into type written words. Suffice it to say that I don't have a clue what this "and the cow jumped over the moon" reference you made is all about, but I'll just satisfy myself by continuing to enjoy this gigantic Guardians of the Galaxy team page with, dare I say it, an even more excellent background! Congrats, pal!

Cho really leaves little to the imagination. It's all right there to marvel over. Beautiful little vignettes add so much fun to the composition.

So clean and so cool how you've got the big splashy Star-Lord and the team headshots!

Oh written in the stars
A million miles away
A message to the page
Oh
Seasons annual
But my Quill never change
Drax I'm on my way
Lets go...
Yeah
You're listening now
They say they ain't heard Venom like this in a while
That's why they play my song to Cho’s lovely vigilant Carol
'Cause I got more new Bendis, lettered mission gone Cowles
So when they see me everybody Goot’s, Groot’s
Man I'm like a young gun fully Drax is back
I cried tear drops over the massive attack
I only make hits like I work with a Rocket like that
Look at my jacket by Frank
So damn berserk
So down to Earth
I'm bringing gravity back
Adopted by the writer I want my fantasy crack
People work art just to get all their Galaxy taxed
Look I'm just Gamora from the Thanos like happily random
Where the hell's all the sanity at, damn
I used to be the kid that Cho once cared about
That's why you have to keep screaming 'til they hear you out

A great roll call page! And I just love roll call pages. Very intriguing that Venom is part of the team. I hope he doesn't try to eat Groot!

Absolutely stunning title page by the great Frank Cho for Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1. I love title pages like this one, that reintroduce the main characters to the reader. I love large half-splashes like this one, of Starlord leaping through outer space past a beautifully detailed moon. I love the contrast between Starlortd's highly detailed hellmet and rippling trench coast with the heavily crosshatched background. And I love the tiny panels featuring tight closerups of the other team members. Gorgeous art by Frank really makes this title page a stand-out.

Yeah this just cant be beat. Frank Cho, when he gets to use the full extent of his inking prowess is unstoppable. I agree, it evokes the star gazing epic scale of the old pulp stories and sci fi comics of the past. And of course, Rocket's on the page, which halways adds points for me!
