DescriptionMy favorite piece in my collection. I love the composition (how the use of black guides your eye across the page just like masterful paintings are supposed to), the abstraction, how Williams follows basic anatomy but distorts within those boundaries. This is particularly true in the last panel. Some of the images of the close-ups have a bluish tint that isn't there where Kent adds white-out (and it doesn't bleed through the black in the shadows as severely as it appears in the scans) and this kind of art is hard to get an accurate scan, anyway. Still, the main purpose is to display Williams' use of various media and techniques -- marker, pen, brush and ink, white out for highlight and effect, graphite, etc. -- and the subtlety of the art.Panel 1 close up: This lightened up image shows where Kent originally had the word balloon. Panel 1 is both so real and unreal. I love how the lettering on the buildings is painted into the black There are two things I regret about the art. I didn't go to the gallery showing at Four Colour Images (joked to them that I couldn't go 'cause I was buying expensive art -- this page) and I should have just gone into more debt and bought more pages from the story. By the end of the show Williams had decided to hold onto the art but I had paid for this before it even opened so it's the only page in private hands. Social/Sharing |

I agree with your description of Kent's work. This page is beautiful.

Oh, and I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary, although I'm sad I'll never be able to acquire any art from this, my absolute favorite sequential work by Kent

hi, no sorry, it's not true it's not the only page in private hands, because i bought the page number 1 in the four color gallery...

I was told that by someone who shared a studio with Kent. I guess he remembered wrong; probably just that Kent regretted selling any of the pages. I'm sure your page like this one reveals so much more detail and gradation than the print version. That's why it's good for my finances that I didn't go to gallery show. Because I would have bought half the pages and I really couldn't even afford this one.

Wow. Just wow. Thank you for the close-ups, they reveal so much more of the artistic process.
