Description

For as long as I've been on this journey of collecting published art, owning a cover was always a dream.. A dream I felt drifting farther and farther away from me, until now. Thanks, Chris!

Alex will always be one of my favorite Spider-Man artists and this cover is a prime example why. Spidey battling Hobgoblin over New York City Rooftops? Yes, please. One of my favorite things about CAF is getting to read all the cool stories that explain how a piece came to be. This one certainly hits that mark. Last year, inker, Rob Stull, graciously shared a memory he had of this cover, where he finds out the Legend, John Romita Sr., had "added" a few things to his finished work. Here's what he had to say:

"My favorite comic book artist and art-hero, the late GREAT John Romita, passed away on June 12th of 2023. He is sorely missed.

Interesting back story regarding this magnificent artwork...

Spider-Man Adventures (volume 1) number 11 cover art (1995).

3-way cover collaboration by Alex Saviuk, yours truly and the legendary John Romita Sr. The first year of my 2-year run on the title. John was still Marvel's art director at the time, and my editor mentioned that he "added" a few things to my finished inks on this cover. Added? I was intrigued. I was inking (almost) exclusively with a brush back then, and sometimes felt my lines were too thick or "beefy." Apparently not nearly as beefy as they could have, or should have been. John's touches, though minimal, were clearly evident, and added additional depth. It made the cover much better, in my opinion. And he probably did it in a few seconds! If you know anything about John Romita, you know that he's a master storyteller and a "brush guy."

From that point on, I inked everything with a brush.

Before beginning my run on this title, my editor facilitated a formal introduction/meeting with Mr. Romita during one of my many trips to New York in 1994. I met John in his office at noon, and by 1pm we were still chopping it up and talking shop like old friends. I received some of the best advice of my entire career that day. Comics or otherwise. Eternally grateful for that moment in time.

Thank You John"

After a battle with cancer, Rob recently passed away on 4/17/25.. I don't know much about him but one thing I know for certain is that he inked 2 of my favorite pieces in my collection. Thank you for the awesome art and thank you for sharing that wonderful story with us. Rest easy, Rob.

Excuse me. I'd just like to ask a question. What does God need with a starship?

Honestly, I love these covers so much. The Spider-Man cartoon in the 90s was so damn good and it's how I got to know Spider-Man, besides the video games.

Your description was very informative. I did not know John Romita worked on this piece. A hidden treasure making the art all more desirable. I did not know Rob Stull recently passed away. May they both Rest in Piece. i love the effects you added on displaying the art with the original transformed into the printed color version and back. I need to learn how to do that. I love your passion for art and the artists alike. We have similar taste. Congratulations on your fabulous collection.

Appreciate the love, Alfredo! It's no wonder I've been following your gallery on CAF for so long because we definitely DO have similar taste. Truth be told, your awesome collection has probably influenced my taste over time as well. (BTW) I use Photoshop to align the 2 images (OA and Published Colors). Once theyre the same size, I use EZGIF.com to make the transitioning GIF and the final step is uploading it to postmages.org for an html link I can copy/paste into my CAF writeups. Hope thats helpful!
