Lucy Bellwood is a cartoonist and tallship sailor. I supported her kickstarter project for
Baggywrinkles: A Lubber’s Guide to Life at Sea. Since my teen years, I’ve read history books about the early years of the US Navy especially the actions against the Barbary pirates of North Africa and the War of 1812. I’ve read the novels of CS Forester’s Horatio Hornblower, Dudley Pope’s Lord Ramage, and Rafael Sabatini’s Captain Blood. Lucy is only the second cartoonist I know with such love for sailing ships. I met the artist at Emerald City in Seattle and picked up one of her new books
A Week at Sea with OHP. Anita Coulter hosted the artist at her fine Trickster store. I was glad for the opportunity to pick up more of Lucy’s work, especially the booklet on her oceanic research trip aboard the
Falkor which used new sonar techniques to map the ocean floor.
