The UN in 1968 was caught in Cold War gridlock, with limited power to enforce peace amid wars and civil rights struggles.

NATO in 1968 was uneasy trying to hold itself together as the Soviet threat loomed and political unity frayed.

It was a year when both organizations were needed more than ever yet struggled to rise to the moment—their hands tied by politics, power struggles, and fear of escalation.
