DescriptionBy February 7, 1978, the Koreagate scandal was still unfolding, with investigations revealing the extent of South Korean influence in U.S. politics. The scandal involved Tongsun Park, a South Korean businessman, who allegedly funneled bribes through the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) to members of the U.S. Congress in an effort to shape American foreign policy in favor of South Korea. The U.S. House of Representatives had formed a subcommittee to investigate the scandal, uncovering evidence that cash payments and favors were used to gain political influence. Some Congress members were reprimanded, while others faced legal consequences, including Representative Richard T. Hanna, who pleaded guilty and served one year in prison. The scandal led to ethics reforms in Congress and heightened awareness of foreign interference in U.S. politics. Social/Sharing |
