Description
This page from Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol. 2) #1, released May 14, 2008, marks the moment the modern Guardians of the Galaxy are officially named. It is an absolutely historic moment in comics. Mantis references her precognitive awareness of the team's future naming on this page. The real-time naming occurs in issue #2 when Rocket Raccoon suggests the title after encountering Vance Astro, who introduces himself as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

This moment gives narrative weight to years of cosmic rebuilding led by Keith Giffen, Dan Abnett, and Andy Lanning. Although the team first assembled in Annihilation: Conquest #6, this page includes the first single panel to depict all core members together.

This is the second page where the full roster of main characters appears together, including Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax. Groot, previously regenerating from a propagated twig after sacrificing himself to destroy the Babel Spire.

Additional members such as Mantis, Adam Warlock, Cosmo, and Quasar are also depicted, reinforcing the page’s importance in establishing the scope of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy lineup.

This page holds historical significance as the visual and narrative confirmation of the Guardians of the Galaxy's modern identity.

11x17 Marvel comic art board.

Thanks Paul. I have been working on this collection for a while and grabbing as many pieces to the puzzle I can find. There are a few of them left, but can't believe where it has come from when it started. I remember getting my first page for the collection that seemed to have slight importance because it talked about the Annihilation Conquest Star-Lord team coming together. The collection has come a long way since then and it has been fun having collectors like you along for the ride.

congrats on the personal grail and example from a GotG #1 issue, that feels like a big accomplishment for your collecting goals regardless of the key moment with Mantis being missing from the art board, it's still the art for THAT page and they still used his image of the character for that dialogue right? So we're up to 3 "naming" pages now...are there more!!?? haha :)

Only one more that I know of. I don't have it and my hope is that it doesn't come out for a while as I couldn't even move on it if it did. 3 of 4 ain't bad though as I was never sure I would even have one until a month ago. To me they are all epic. This just being a personal grail. Honestly, even though I posted these quick, as we all know with art, there are only one in the world. These will be a blip on everyones radar and will probably fall hidden in the collection over the next week or two. However, when you truly think of it. This is the beginning of a major pillar of Disney Marvel. In my mind it is incredible that I am the caretaker of these. An average Joe that took out an extra job to do stupid things like buy comic art and have an amazing wife that hasn't killed me for it yet lol.

So it's gonna be forever
And it's gonna go down in names
You can tell me Mantis over, mmm
If the buy was worth the pain
Got a long list of Pelletiers
He'll tell you I'm insane
'Cause you know raccoons are players
Drax you love the name

'Cause Guardians we're reckless
We'll take this page too far
Quill leaves you breathless, mmm
Or with Galaxy art
Got a long list of collectors
They'll tell Groot I'm insane
But Magyar has blank space, baby
And ink writes their name
