Description
This is wonderfully early original artwork by Larry Welz published from Cherry #5, published in 1987. This was the sixth page of “The Job Interview” story, which was a parody of the biggest televangelist scandal during the 80s. Featuring our main character Cherry working as a secretary and presumably parodying Jessica Hahn, caught in a situation with the morally corrupt televangelist that looks a lot like Jim Bakker (though the artist would probably deny any association!). Finished in pen and ink by Larry Welz on extra-large 14.5x20” illustration board.
Cherry represented one of the most popular and influential underground comics ever produced, starting with issue #1 called Cherry Poptart (later changed to Cherry for legal reasons) published by Last Gasp in 1982. Mostly known for utilizing the iconic Archie comics look established by Dan Decarlo for decades, the comics deal with very adult content depicting sex, drug use, and other counter culture topics produced in that era.

At the time, the holier than thou televangelists were all over late night taking over what was time that usually played infomercials.  Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye fooled a lot of people and their downfall was also a media sensation when they cried an apology on air after Jessica told all.  She then posed nude and became a D-list celeb herself.  I'm pretty sure Welz would have been a target for these religious groups and he had an ax to grind to make this.  Those groups who love censorship are back in a big way in 2025.
