Description

Of the many tributes paid to him by fellow actors, following his passing, I think Tom Hanks put it best when he said 'there has never been a Gene Hackman type. There has only been Gene Hackman.' As he is one of my favorites, i felt a tribute was in order. Three films of his, i watch at least once a year - Mississippi Burning, Crimson Tide and Unforgiven. But it is his performance in Francis Coppola's 'The Conversation' that stands out for me now. It's the story about a reclusive surveillance expert who faces a moral dilemma when his recordings reveal a potential murder. Hackman's portrayal of Harry Caul is one of the most affecting and tragic characters in movies. One of the greatest American actors of the 20th century, he was voted 'least likely to succeed' by his first theatre school. Thank you sir, for the movies.
