DescriptionI posted what little pictures I took from SDCC yesterday, today I will post art.Nearing the end of the postings from my Original Comic Art Unboxing with Ruben DaCollector. A bittersweet but brilliant piece from the late great Jackson "Butch" Guice. Jackson Guice sadly passed away May 1 2025. Jackson Guice was revered in the realm of comic books, dedicating over 40 remarkable years to this beloved craft. His work brought to life iconic characters in titles that spanned generations. Superman in "Action Comics," the mystic world of "Dr. Strange," or the electrifying adventures found in "Iron Man" and "The Flash." He wielded his pencil like a sword, crafting tales that inspired dreams and ignited imaginations. Characters such as those in "X Factor," "Birds of Prey," "Resurrection Man," "Captain America," and "Ruse" all bore the indelible mark of his talent, a testament to his extraordinary contribution to storytelling in the comic art form. He could draw human drama with the same beauty, skill, and gravitas as the deadly, dynamic superhero battles. This commission was the result of a last minute change. Let me explain, after I received The Question from Mr Guice I signed up for another commission soon after. I intended to get Etrigan the Demon. I thought he would do a killer Jack Kirby inspired Demon. When Dave Karlen informed me my spot was up I asked if it was okay to change it to Walt Simonson's Manhunter. Why the change? I was looking at Guice's recent work and felt the costume, the look, the intensity and feel of Manhunter was the perfect fit for Guice. So glad I changed my mind. Guice said this was possibly the first or only the second time he ever actually drew the character despite his childhood love of him. Walter Simonson said, “One of the best drawings of Manhunter I’ve seen that wasn’t by me!” What higher praise could one ask for. Manhunter commission by artist Jackson "Butch" Guice on 11x17 board. 2024 I've included two color versions I found on the Internet done by Scott Dutton. As a big-time Goodwin/Simonson Manhunter fan I am with Walt on this one. Congrats on your expert choice of character in his “The Himalayan Incident”. Sorry about the loss of your friend. All comics fandom feels his absence and seeing all these relatively-recent drawings that people have posted makes me more sad at all the work we will now never see. Thank you for sharing this drawing with us.

This is one of my favourite pieces you unboxed that night! So outstanding. I'd have loved to have seen Butch's Demon, but this character choice was meant to be! Did you get that quote from Walter personally? Also, how in the hell do you manage to post images of a colored version, including one with trade dress, and not even mention it, let alone explain what those are?!?

The color versions, both, is fan art.

Guice took every bit of odd geometry in the Simonson design and embraced it to make it stand out even more in this commission!

This is great! Interesting how it pops up just after we both were admiring that old Simonson/Manhunter sketch at Albert's booth. Nice tribute to Butch in the description and great choice as a last minute change.
