Description

A concept sketch of a Snowspeeder hand-drawn and numbered "0001" by renowned visual effects art director Joe Johnston during pre-production on Irvin Kershner's Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) led Rogue Squadron in a fleet of Snowspeeders to take down Imperial All Terrain Armored Transports (AT-AT walkers) and protect the Rebel base on Hoth. Six months after the release of the original Star Wars, Johnston started work on The Empire Strikes Back. Johnston and other designers numbered their sketches as they worked on the film. This is significant as this sketch is the very first sketch done by Johnston for the film.

This early sketch depicting the side view of a Snowspeeder is rendered, dated "11/77," and numbered "0001" in ink by Johnston, indicating it was the first drawing he completed for the production. Four years later, the film would receive a Special Achievement Academy Award® for its groundbreaking visual effects work. The art paper on which the sketch is rendered exhibits yellowing from age and a folded corner. Dimensions: 11" x 8.5" (28 cm x 21.75 cm)
