Description

Will Dyson (1880-1938) is considered one of Australia�s greatest illustrator�s and political cartoonists, especially with the powerful war cartoons he created. Dyson married Norman Lindsay�s sister Ruby in 1909 and the couple soon relocated to London, where Dyson began a long association with The Daily Herald newspaper. At the newspaper, Dyson supported largely progressive issues, and he held a successful exhibition of war cartoons in January 1915 in the Leicester Galleries in the center of London. Dyson�s �Kultur Cartoons� book was a great triumph and featured a forward by the author H.G. Wells. Will Dyson�s original political cartoons are quite scarce, and I�m happy to be able to offer up a powerful piece that was published on March 27, 1915. Titled (when published) �The Natural Combination�, the political cartoon deals with the pre-war combination of state and profiteers against Labor, versus the Prime Minister�s fears of Labor and profit against the state. Dyson makes the case that the state should work with Labor for the betterment of all. The drawing, done entirely in brush and ink, is quite powerful, displaying Dyson�s masterful figure work. His brush line is elegant and powerful, and Dyson does a tremendous job of creating weight and volume, especially with the use of the flat patterning on the jacket, something Phil May did well. The piece measures 21��x 15�� and is laid down onto a heavier board. The upper portion of the drawing shows some surface wear, but I cannot tell what caused it. There is some toning/discoloration, but given that this cartoon is 110 years old, it presents quite well. It is in solid VG condition. I�ve only seen two Dyson originals hit the market in the past 20 years, so this is a rare opportunity to pick up an excellent example by one of the true greats. $775.00 + 21.00 first class shipping.
