Death at Death's Door

Page 66 (Death and Dream)

by Jill Thompson

Ink, graphite on illustration board

11 x 17 in.

Not For Sale

When Lucifer Morningstar abdicates his throne - leaving the Key to Hell with Dream, the reluctant Sandman contemplates what to do as hell's nastiest denizens are free to evacuate the premises. Unfortunately for Death, they end up in her apartment. It's up to Death to save the day and the afterlife - not to mention the carpet. This whimsical, manga-inspired take on the Seasons of Mist story arc from The Sandman was written and illustrated by Eisner Award winner and Sandman fan-favorite artist Jill Thompson.

This particular page features the two most prominent of The Endless: Dream in foreground and Death front and center as well as in the bottom panel. This is pretty much the perfect main-characters panel-page from the 208 page graphic novel. This is also a great example of latter-day Jill Thompson art, which takes a lot of cues from 70s Japanese manga legend, Keiko Takemiya who helped pioneer the Boy's Love comics genre–which perfectly suits the source material here.

Side note: I met Keiko-chan in the early 90s and she was delightful; sketching for me and engaging a long conversation thru a translator.

To say that Death is one of my favorite comic book characters of all time would be a gross understatement. I have two Death tattoos (Chris Bachalo's 7 Faces of Death promo art, and a commission from Vincent Locke) that each go back to early 1993 as does my tattoo of the Key to Hell as featured on the textured hardcover collection of Seasons of Mist.

Jill Thompson Sandman related AND published art, nice! Manga-esque but can still see her style within. I never read this but it looks like an interesting adaptation and Season Of Mists is probably the best story arc choice for such a project where you can have the majority of the Endless brought together.

In light of recent controversies it might be worthwhile for other prominent Sandman artists to pursue a similar avenue. I would love to see Marc Hempel and Mark Wheatley take-on a 45° alternate view of The Kindly Ones

The size, the storytelling, the overall look shows that Jill Thompson was fully immersed in manga and we get those big eyes and romance tension.

I would hope there is no romance tension in this specific case.

Not the typical Jill Thompson style, for obvious reasons, and very nicely done.
