DescriptionFantastic watercolor from one of Rackham’s most cherished illustrated works, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, published in 1926. The art’s inscription (from Act IV, scene I) reads, “each one, tripping on his toe, Will be here with mop and mow.” Rackham really needs no introduction -he is without question one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) children’s artist ever, and he revolutionized fantasy illustration in the early 20th century. His influence is monumental, and there are dozens of artists working today who name him as an influence. For a Rackham lover (like me), this one knocks it out of the park. Charming, delightful and, in a word, magical. An instant favorite in my collection. From the estate of Roberta Brook Astor (yes, from THAT Astor family). This one apparently hung over her bed (per the note on the back of the art). Watercolor, ink, and pencil illustration on paper (15 3/8 x 11). Social/Sharing |

Amazing to see this here on CAF. To say he is the greatest children's book illustrator though, is like trying to pick who is your favorite among your children or picking your favorite type of pizza. At any rate, thanks for posting a rare find!

Wow. If Rackham isn't #1, I don't know who is. Fantastic example.
