Description
Francavilla did this piece at Baltimore Con 2012. I requested Doctor Mid-Nite because the costume is similar to Francavilla's Black Beetle. His art also has a noir, pulp feel that was the right fit for a caped mystery man armed with blackout bombs and who can only see in the dark. The sketchbook also didn't have a Doctor Mid-Nite. He's not among the JSA'ers depicted in the sketchbook's first page, which is Joe Staton recreation of the cover to All-Star Comics 3 cover. He didn't join the team until All-Star Comics 8, a rationalization for not having him earlier in the sketchbook. I'm sure Charles McNider and Pieter Cross would understand as well as approve of their alter ego's first appearance in the sketchbook.

I find that some artists don't like being on the first page when you start a new sketchbook.  Thy don't want the pressure of setting the bar for other artist to follow and one up them.  That said, I would be proud to have a Francavilla entry on the first page or any page in my sketchbook because he knows how to fill it up with some good brushy tones for a cool retro look.

Cool! Did you at least make him page 8 of the sketchbook?

These early 2010s convention sketches will practically be vintage soon! Cool piece and story behind the choice for the sketchbook. Great photo from the show too!

A lovely entry for your sketchbook. Francavilla has such a minimalist, retro style, that he was a perfect choice to draw one of the JSA members. I'm blown away that he was already a working pro in 2012. I guess I must've only discovered him after that.
