DescriptionCLICK HERE FOR AUCTION LISTING!9-3/8x12.5" mat contains sheet w/eight 13/16" dia. prototype button designs. These consist of stats that were cut out and hand-colored before being applied to artboard/ Likely created in 1944, characters featured include - Uncle Wille, Pop Jenks, Little Orphan Annie, Kayo, Lord Plushbottom, Shadow, Smokey Stover and Moon Mullins. Kayo and Smokey are very similar in design to the buttons that were produced, while others differ. Partial handwritten pencil note at top left reads "Actual Size." Artboard is evenly aged and has some lt. dust soiling. Color art remains clean. Annie and Shadow are missing small pin portion of designs. VF overall. Comes w/10.75x13.25" mat containing sheet of paper w/original art preliminary pitch for proposed revival of the Pep Pins concept, instead to be offered as inserts in bags of Jay's Popcorn. Dates to 1952 as hand-lettered text includes "Build Up Your Jay's 1952 Popcorn Sales With These Comic Characters" showing pencil original art full body images of Orphan Annie, Lillums, Smitty and Shadow at top right. Ad also proposes repurposing "A Tie-In With A Self-Liquidating Beanie Cap!" w/grease pencil original art image at left. Additional ink on white correctional fluid designs show buttons for the four characters seen at top surrounding pencil original art of bag of popcorn. Sheet is evenly aged and has three horizontal fold lines w/some scattered lt. wear to white text. Fine/VF overall. Both pieces have "A Creation Of Sam Gold - Premium King" foil crown sticker at lower right corners of mats. A truly historic and one-of-a-kind lot.
