Description
Continuing on the Halloween theme, another page from that werewolf arc in Detective by the ever-great Ivan Reis !

The first panel sees the werewolf beginning shaking off having been frozen with a nice sense of scale as the Bat prudently steps back…

The close up on his mouth shows us he is now snarling for action…

As he sprints all claws and fangs out towards the Bat.

This allows me a small digression regarding the fact that Reis chose to render his werewolf like an actual wolf, with a longer nose and maw, à la the Howling or an American werewolf in London which I much prefer over the flat nosed types of werewolves who owes more to bears than actual wolves (i.e. the Wolf Man– 1941).

And then, we get a spectacular half splash of Batman in true distress as his monstrous opponent easily lifts him off the ground. I like how Reis played with Batman’s body position to highlight the impact of him being lifted off the ground.

You will note that there are barely any backgrounds here but only using staging, Reis manages to expertly tell this very quick and action-oriented scene with everything we need to know.

Lastly, this wash technique he used during this run is so great in terms of rendering as it gives true weight to his characters and ambiances (see my other pages of this arc in this very gallery, including a 3 pages sequence).

Reis’ art can now be found on 666 Hyde Street from Ghost Machine 😉

Sweet Reis pencils! I really dig that close up of the werewolf's mouth/teeth in panel 2 before the camera pulls back for the rest of the scene to play out (which is also nicely illustrated!). And I agree with you for the most part (without looking at every case right now there may be an exception who knows) about Werewolf designs working better when they are being more wolf than man (or more wolf than bear like you pointed out in that specific case). Another nice addition and share for October!

Batman must have been giving out granola bars for trick-or-treaters.  The Wolf Man was not amused!

I think you may have got something here, but Empire Strikes Back style, rather:

Panel 1:

-Chewie: Trick or treat, Lando?

- Lando: I don’t have anything left, Chewie!

Panel 2:

-Chewie: Snifff…

Panel 3:

-Chewie: You liar! I can smell them!

Panel 4:

-Chewie: Where are they?!?! Where are they?!?!

-Lando: I…didn’t…have a choice! It was...Vader! He stole all the chocolate covered meatballs and the caramel dipped beef jerkies!

A classic horror tale update!  Batman vs the Werewolf is in referrence to Batman 255 and perfect for the season of frights under Reis' tight pencils!!

I, too, prefer werewolves to be drawn with a long muzzle, but then again, aside fro mthe original Wolf Man, have they even been depicted "flat faced" in other films or comics? As any other page featuring Batman and a werewolf would do, this immediately conjured up memories of Batman #255 by Neal Adams. It's interesting that I find the idea of a werewolf going up against Batman scarier and more worrisome than superpowered villains. Regardless, I wish Reis preferred the long eared cowl rather than the short, but other than that artistic choice, the art is a very pleasing sight to behold.

Stunning work!! Feels like a direct evolution of Neal Adams work with Batman vs a werewolf

WOW - Reis can draw anything beautifully and brilliantly, can't he?  Yeesh - what a page!!  Fantastic technique and storytelling at every level here.  I love how the main wolf's figure is left in half shadow in panel one (and how Ivan just leaves the space open with his pencils).  Panel two's snapping shut of the jaws is -almost- my favorite: this would be -the- moment in a lycanthrope's change when the transition would officially be complete, right?  When the physical pain of transformation would finally be overridden by instinct and urges dark and primal, and the mouth would be dedicated to a more grim and grisly purpose, as there's no longer the need to be used for howling in pain...?  Panel 3 (with its FANTASTIC lighting, hatching, and figure work) also almost steals the show for me, but it's the way Ivan differentiates the wolf's coat over the background of Batman's costume in panel 4 (great pencil strokes, and beautiful tonal work) that really lands this thing.  Ever since I saw Wrightson's illustrations in Stephen King's 'Mark of the Werewolf' as a kid (long before I saw The Howling or American Werewolf In London), I have always equated the long-snouted werewolf to him, and I'm very happy that the werewolf's hands around Batman's throat look -so- Wrightson-esque here... :)  Just off-the-leash awesomeness by Ivan: a GREAT pick up, F M, and a fun and fitting Halloween add!  LOVE it!!
