DescriptionA simple, minimal, yet unforgettable cover from one of the greatest single issues ever published. Barry Windsor-Smith began this tour de force by stripping the issue’s cover down to its barest essentials, creating a now-iconic composition.Iron Man has long suffered from a shortage of truly great covers—especially in this era—but this striking image stands out as a rare and remarkable exception in the pantheon. And a prototype for the Windsor-Smith/Layton collaboration that would define Pre-Unity Valiant Comics. Also of note, many of the stylistic choices and techniques that would later be popularized by Jim Lee and Scott Williams are present. Social/Sharing |

I don't think it's that simple or minimal. It is just right. Very nice.

A late 80s Iron Man classic from BWS! I love how it was colored also in the final, minty copies of the book present really well. Amazing cover art, congrats!

Standout cover, so much so that I went back recently and re-read his Iron Man books.

A great era for BWS art. It's a style closer to the Weapon X saga as everything is rendered in a meticulously measured manner. Leaving the blank space makes us focus on what's there even more cleanly.

It's great to see it without the colours, I find them overpowering

Stark imprisoned by his own techno-obsession. 30 years of character's history on one single piece of paper. Museum quality .

My favorite piece in this gallery. I remember when my buddy Bob had this almost complete with cover and was short a page. Some punk inker was trying to hold him up. Great great cover!

A perfect example of "less is more", BWS making a big impact with no wasted lines. Great pick-up!

One of the greatest issues of that era--there must be an interesting story behind how BWS ended up doing it. Gorgeous artwork and a great introspective story--and a masterpiece of a cover. And while this may not be reflected in the original art, I've always loved how the published cover was colored--that blue is so deep and striking. I assume that was BWS doing the coloring himself, as he always preferred to do. Congrats on acquiring an iconic piece!

A really clever image, made all the more eye-catching by the wisps of smoke and thick wires obscuring the logo. Beautifully and delicately rendered. A great cover!
