Description
"They Came from Shangri-La!" by Joe Kubert, cover date June-July 1970. Letterer unknown.

Full-tier battle panel is exemplary Kubert action, emotion, and danger.

Unknown Soldier first appeared in 1966 as a mysterious soldier coming to Sgt. Rock and Easy Company's rescue in Our Army At War #168. Four years later Kubert resurrected him to lead Star Spangled War Stories, with #151 being his first. Nearly every story featured a new disguise and persona, opening the door to adventures in all services and theaters of the war.

This introductory story has Unknown Soldier disguising himself to pilot a bomber in the Doolittle raid.

The story's title refers to President Roosevelt's tongue-in-cheek response, "Shangri-La," when a journalist asked where the planes took off from. Shangri-La is the utopian setting of the novel "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton and Frank Capra movie starring Ronald Colman.

I've added photos of the raid from the CAF entry of the first page in the Combat #10 Midway issue.

Definitely fun rewatch at any time. First two very different and best of franchise. My go-to rewatches include first season Space 1999. Dragon's Domain, an Alien-like episode. Which others are your rewatch go-to's?

An amazing piece of Joe Kubert art. The amazing thing about being a War focused collector is that you have your choice of countless pages, drawn by one of the greatest artists ever to grace the business!

Thanks, Rubén! Very fortunate! Thinking of moving CAF Kubert to his own gallery.

That top panel could be a Kirby-esque Title/DPS all by itself!

Fateful descision for the captain to sacrifice the plane to give his men a chance of escape.  Kubert embeds us right in the action!

Thanks Steve! Photos from official military website I believe. I like to put pages in historical context. I learn quite a bit doing that.
