Description

Casanova's guest Jérôme Sombre has an unusual sales pitch:

“And your contribution to the libretto of Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' was not acknowledged, thus depriving you of a considerable income.”

“But that... nobody knows that!”

“Yes, your pride sometimes prevents you from claiming what is rightfully yours.”

“Who the hell are you, gloomy one? What do you want?”

“I am a magical goldsmith! And this is my sample collection.” (Opens his suitcase)

“But it's simply... wonderful!”

“I know!”

“Then you should also know that you've come to the wrong address. I'd love to buy all your masterpieces, but I don't have a penny to my name.”

“I know that too, and I even know that you were harboring thoughts of death. Is your pistol loaded?” (Sombre points it at his head.)

“Are you crazy? Put it down!” (Sombre shoots himself but is unharmed.) “Aaah!”

“Sir! Sir! I heard a shot...”

“It's nothing, Camillo. Everything's alright. Leave us alone.”

This ten page flashback serves the dual purpose of familiarizing the reader with both Casanova and Sombre. I wonder whether Sombre was modeled after Alec Guinness or Vincent Price. The detail on Sombre's gold creations is amazing. Don't miss the concerned look on the portrait over Camillo's head in the penultimate panel.

Those are some nifty little magic goldsmith masterpieces. I knew this had Mozart written all over it!
