DONALD'S PENGUIN (1939) - Tootsie the Penguin

A delightful hand-inked and painted production cel of Tootsie the penguin from Jack King's Donald Duck short film Donald's Penguin. Shown full figure in a wonderfully typical pose, Tootsie brings her stubborn charm and comic timing to life.

The cel is presented on an original Courvoisier wood background, part of the historic programme that introduced Disney production artwork to the public for the first time in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Courvoisier Galleries in San Francisco received original cels directly from the studio, paired them with specially created presentation backgrounds, often airbrushed or hand-painted, and then sold them as art. Each piece was unique, which makes these early setups highly prized today.

Cels from Donald's Penguin are seldom seen, and the survival of a Courvoisier setup elevates this example into an important artefact of both Disney's animation history and the beginnings of animation art collecting.
