Description
"The Aegean Eagle!" by George Evans. Cover date September 1973.

Story synopsis: Rudolf von Eschwege's quest for fame brings death and destruction in the air over Macedonia.

Historical note: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Bosnian Serb in June 1914 sparked a diplomatic crisis and military escalation that led to the outbreak of World War I. In 1915, the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria conquered the assassin's homeland of Serbia, creating a front line stretching from the Albanian Adriatic coast to the Struma River and Aegean Sea. Neither side was able to break through until the Allied offensive in September 1918 forced Bulgaria to capitulate and liberated Serbia. (Wikipedia)

Love the George Evans art, all those planes look so great. and this really makes you think about what it must have been like learning how to fly (and to fly with combat approaches/manuevers too) during the WWI era. nice page Peter!

Yes, but what's the story with Eschwege? Will he become the scourge of the skies? Or will he crash and burn? Enquiring minds want to know!

Dead men tell no tales!

PS - he died in a crash after attacking a balloon that exploded and damaged his plane.

We kind of took for granted how these guys risked their lives just by getting into one of these contraptions without even getting into combat situations.

There's a reason George Evans was known for his art featuring airplanes. Look how beautifully he draws them. But not just that. You can't overlook that his storytelling and overall draftsmanship is also excellent!

Thanks, Rubén! Excellent points! Agree! PS - I added Evans's bio from EC's Frontline Combat #13. That issue also features a Kurtzman and Evans story about Medal of Honor Lt. Frank Luke. Unsurprisingly, its perspective differs from the DC version by Maurer.
