Description
Original "Shadow" Painting: "The "Black Master"
21" x 30" (Oil on Canvas)
(March 1932)

Historical Significance:

1). Main Shadow Image:
**First appearance of The modern Shadow as we know him, to ever be used on a pulp cover!**
Artist: George Rozen (main Shadow image).

2). The secondary Shadow image in the bottom right corner:
**This is the first cover image of any kind of the Shadow ever used on a pulp cover (actually first painted and used on the painting of Shadiw #3 from 1931.
Artist: Jerome Rozen (small image bottom right corner).

Note:
Image on the bottom right corner was first painted and used on the bottom corner of Shadow #3 (1931) was removed & inserted in future paintings and finally left permanently in this painting (Shadow #8 from March 1932)

Note: (If the paintings for Shadow number 3, 4, 5 and 7 ever surface, they would be missing this bottom
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
** The white canvas at the top was extended to bring it back to its original size of 21" x 30".

The framing was a challenge as the painting image was 1 1/2" inches from the edge of the canvas, so the framer used a black gloss mat (almost with a metal look) around the painting and between the frame. It turned out great.

A classic work and a piece (or even pieces) of pulp history.

Great piece of history!  The white background makes all the deep colors of the Shadow more dark and mysterious.
