Description
2023 Galaxy Gods 1 p34
By James Coats (1976-)
14 x 17.3 in., ink on board
Coppola Collection

Artist James Coats, along with his twin brother John, create the self-published, Kirby-esque cosmic comic series “Galaxy Gods.” Each 44-page issue is in the style of the Silver Age classics. Coats describes his style as compressing Jack Kirby's "kinetic punch" and "Saturday-morning cartoon adventure" into an energetic and visually striking form.

Coats made some original art pages from issue 1 & 2, as well as some character commissions, available during the 2025 Kickstarter that released issue 2.

This page features our hero, Prometheus, taking on The Living Totem.

Definitely a 70's King Kirby inspired piece that's executed so well!  The boldness of a god's hubrus on display!  They show they are bigger and more ostentaciously decorated above that of normal man.  They make the scene more powerfully epic.

The books are a fun read.

Sounds like an interesting project, and this page looks great with that split half splash page design and throwback Kirby-esque art style ! I like the use of shadow/silhouette for Prometheus' face when he's lifting The Living Totem above his head in panel 2.

There are about 85 copies of each of issues 1 and 2 still available at powerpulpcomics.com (I think issue 1 has been reprinted).
