DescriptionIt’s been some time since I managed to add a new Paul Smith piece, and this one comes from a recent group deal with a French collector. I always liked this piece as it harkens back to Paul’s original OHTMU entry of the character and the markup was only 50% as regards the usual self-priced Paul Smith pieces which I found acceptable obviously.Ol’ Dragon Man seemingly is having flying fun here which I thought would be perfectly suited for X-Mas. (Because if dragons are not part of our Christmas lore, well, they SHOULD BE 😉) Nothing much to say about Paul smith’s perfect linework. The brush work is amazing (just look at those confident brush stroke on his legs). The variation of the thickness of the line, how easy and free handed it looks. From a design standpoint, I love the reptilian tail and the tiny wings that are so powerful that they easily lift his whole heavy mass. He is clearly at ease with flying as his pose feels super natural (as opposed to, let’s say, a fist extended Superman one). Such a great (and sadly too rare) artist! Merry Christmas to all from Dragon Man and myself: GROOOOONK ! Social/Sharing |

It is obviously a nice drawing, but what I'm more excited about is that even you as a non-sports fan, are shouting out the legendary New England Patriot, Rob Gronkowski. Groooooonk!

Dragon Man's built like a truck and Smith gives him that heft with well chosen lineweights!

Yes, the heavy lines on the legs are great, as you write. Smith gives him real bulk while allowing him to float in the air too. Nice image.

Great Smith piece! His compositions have such a great mass to them - really substantive - and his line and look is so classic. I also love all the texture Paul added to this; between DM's scales and the leather-like "stretch marks" of his skin and wings (to say nothing of the beautifully drawn head), well, I'd imagine it makes you a right jolly old elf, with a giggle in your belly like a bowl full of jelly. :) Hope you had a great holidays, pal!

Perfect character choice for PMS. So well suited for Smitty's style and linework. For whatever reason, the added heft makes me think of Toho's Baby Godzilla. LOL

I remember when this went up for sale on Paul's site! Absolutely perfect. I ended up getting a Dragon Man in '22.
