Description

As a fan of Alpha Flight since its inception, I was totally excited when this baby showed up for sale. (Thank you so much to the seller who is here on CAF.) Most of us have a bucket list, and an AF piece by Byrne was on mine. AH #22 came out 1 month before Alpha Flight #1 and from what I was told when I got this, was that this was the initial art Byrne created for that first comic, but was later asked to change to a new composition and so was used here instead. AH was a comics news magazine back before the internet, and along with Comics Interview and later Wizard - was integral to collectors who wanted to dive deeper into the hobby. Fun thing to point out - is the comment next to the Canadian price at the top of the magazine. Since the price is higher in Canada, and since Byrne is Canadian- the magazine said "Sorry John". Which I thought was funny. For those who keep score on these kind of things, its also worth pointing out the exchange rate on that cover is better than it is today. As always, thank you for checking out my gallery!

A fabulous (and historic) piece.  One could almost understand why the publisher/editor might want a more exciting action shot of the team for a first issue.  But as introductory shots go, this one is a pretty effective (not to mention impressive) group "photo."

Awesome Byrne cover! Great presentation of the entire team. And for me, being used on an Amazing Heroes cover might be better than being on an AF cover. That magazine was so needed back in the day.

Congrats!

Congrats D,

Great team rendition. Oddly enough, Byrne didn't do a lot of full team group shots in early AF issues. Great get.

Amazing Heroes was a wonderful news magazine that offered news about what projects creators would be working on next, and on top of that included some really good creator interviews. To have a John Byrne Alpha Flight cover from this magazine is truly quite a special honor for those of us who were around back then. Many congrats!

Exceptional. I too love AH (both the magazine and the artist ^^) and AF (I mean, I loved X-Men like crazy but AF was my first experiencing Byrne in real publication time).

Interestingly enough, I find that Byrne's take on Aurora, Northstar, Snowbird and maybe Shaman is slightly different (cartoonier?) than they would look later in publication ?

A John Byrne "Alpha Flight: First Class" cover?!?  Eeshk - nothing less than a  -triumphant- add here, Duke!!  Wow!  Yup - like many others, Amazing Heroes was my jam back in the day; for a kid in a small town (in the pre-internet era) AH couldn't be beat for the hot goss a rabid comics fan needed to get through the day.  I had a subscription, and each new issue was worth its weight in gold for the sweet, sweet exclusive info it contained.  And the Byrne-covered ones were easily four times as exciting, of course, because that meant his latest project was the focus...!  And remember: for the first year of his AF run, John focused on solo stories, making this a rare published "class photo" from that time...  This is PHENOMENAL, Duke - MEGA-congrats!!

What's the current cost price of "1 million beaver pelts and a Hudson's bay blanket"? You know someone with a warehouse full will ask. You surely also know this should really reside in a Canadian collection, which rules me out entirely as only they would have that many pelts and blankets. Wait a second...Are you Canadian? You buy artwork with pelts and blankets! You learn something new every day. I thought you were non specific. At least that is what the country tag on your section says, or words to that effect. I really should stop making dry comments on nice artwork but just cannot resist when I see something like your ridiculous for sale status.

Wow, what an absolute heavyweight of a piece.

Owning a John Byrne Alpha Flight cover from this era is a massive achievement, but the Amazing Heroes #22 cover is on another level. It isn’t just a phenomenal piece of art; it’s a historic document marking the literal launch of the team's historic run in 1983.
