Description
Such a beautiful image from Elizabeth Shippen Green, one of the best known women illustrators working during the golden age of illustration. Like many great illustrators of the period, Green studied under Howard Pyle, and with Jessie Wilcox Smith and Violet Oakley set up an illustration studio in Pennsylvania. The trio are now known as the “red rose girls,” and are by far the most prominent female illustrators of the time.

Green published in many periodicals, but is best known for her work in Harper’s, which gave her a rare (and lucrative) exclusive contract that lasted almost 20 years. This was published in the March 1904 edition of Harper’s, illustrating a story by Kate Whiting Patch called, “A Garden Idyll.” 24” x 14” mixed media on art board. From the Kelly Collection of American Illustration Art.

Wow! How interesting that in 1904, a studio of female artists were working together and doing published illustration art. Before this, I'd never heard of Elizabeth Shippen Green, or her fellow artists, but now I'd love to find out more. Thanks for sharing this!
