G.I. Joe: America’s Elite Issue #17 Baroness Cover

First, a huge thank you to my friend A. Williams for letting this piece go. She knows how much I love Baroness — and how few true cover pieces I own — which makes this one especially meaningful. It was also one of the first pieces she ever posted on CAF, so owning it feels personal.

Originally, a Baroness cover by Adam Hughes was planned. I don’t really know the reasoning behind the change. Rumors were it wasn’t done fast enough for approval or just wasn’t HASBRO approved. Instead, we got a darker, more militarized take by Tim Seeley and honestly, it fits perfect!

I’m a real world gun fan so when an artist nails it I love it. There was clearly some weapon evolution between the pencils and final color production. In pencils, her rifle clearly echoes the Steyr AUG with its classic bullpup layout and integrated foregrip. Visually a very popular gun in 80’s movies and art. In the final color version, it becomes more tactical and modern — sharper lines, heavier optic and heavier details throughout the gun. The change makes the image feel more modern and serious rather then old classic.

Inside the issue, Cobra — led by Cobra Commander — wages coordinated global war. And Baroness isn’t a seductive side character here; she’s disciplined, strategic, and fully embedded in Cobra’s command structure. The cover captures that evolution perfectly: poised, armed, and in control.

As a Baroness fan, this piece represents strength, authority, and a defining era where she stands not just as a sexy icon — but as a pillar of Cobra’s power.
