Description
An extraordinary original hand-painted promotional cel from DIC Entertainment, created for MipCom 1986 and representing one of the most significant pieces of 1980s animation industry history.

This one-of-a-kind masterpiece was commissioned to promote DIC's presence at MipCom 1986 (Booth #10.07), but also featured as the wraparound cover for The Hollywood Reporter's special MIP-TV issue of April 11, 1986, (Image shown for reference, not included in the lot) before being displayed prominently in DIC's booth at the Cannes market. Hand-painted on the reverse of the cel in the traditional animation method, the artwork showcases museum-quality craftsmanship that has remained in pristine condition for nearly four decades.

The cel features DIC's complete character roster circa 1986, celebrating poolside at the "MIP-86 Cannes" hotel. Hulk Hogan relaxes by the pool alongside Inspector Gadget, while Heathcliff, Rainbow Brite, Kidd Video, the Ghostbuster Ghost, and other DIC properties create a vibrant tapestry of 1980s animation excellence. An airbrushed blonde sunbather reading a 'DIC Spells Success' magazine provides a cheeky nod to airbrush masters like Mel Ramos and the legacy of Alberto Vargas, as well as commentary on the studio's confidence.

The technique recalls the glossy commercial art aesthetic that dominated 1980s advertising, bridging the gap between fine art and commercial illustration that defined the decade's visual culture

The intricate hand-painted background, signed by artist "CA," also depicts La Croisette with a wonderful attention to detail. The Palais des Festivals, luxury hotels such as The Carlton, and the art deco icon of the French Riviera, The Martinez. The Mediterranean coastline and palm-lined promenade are unmistakable.

This artwork captures a pivotal moment in animation history when DIC Entertainment stood at the apex of their international expansion. Founded in Paris in 1976 by Jean Chalopin, the studio had successfully conquered American Saturday morning television by 1986, producing an unprecedented volume of content that defined childhood for an entire generation. The artwork represents not just corporate promotion but a celebration of creative achievement that influenced global children's entertainment.

MipCom 1986 marked a watershed moment for international television commerce, and DIC's elaborate promotional strategy demonstrated their transformation from European startup to global entertainment powerhouse. The decision to commission fine art-quality animation for promotional purposes reflects the studio's understanding that their characters had transcended mere commercial properties to become cultural icons.

The rarity of this piece cannot be overstated. As a commissioned promotional artwork that served multiple high-profile purposes, only this single example exists. Corporate promotional materials from this era rarely survived, making authenticated pieces exponentially valuable to collectors. The pristine condition speaks to careful preservation by someone who recognized its historical significance from the moment of creation.

This cel represents the intersection of fine art, commercial animation, and international business strategy during the golden age of television animation. It captures not only DIC's character portfolio but the optimism and ambition of an industry experiencing unprecedented global expansion. For collectors of animation art, this piece offers the ultimate combination of artistic excellence, historical significance, and absolute uniqueness that defines museum-quality acquisitions.

A singular artifact from animation's most dynamic era, preserved in perfect condition and representing the apex of 1980s promotional artistry.
