Very creepy!  The stipple in the darkness has a fear inducing effect! 

I admit to being completely unfamiliar with this story or artist.

However, the composition of this page is so strong I have to learn more. Great pacing to build the suspense. The decision to tilt the second to last panel is superb! It just feels so jarring where it needed to be. Exceptional artwork.

I think this was Richard's first published work and his style changed a bit with his next story. 
He's a great storyteller!
