STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) Full-Size EV-9D9 (Richard Marquand) Dyeline

A full-size dyeline of EV-9D9 (Richard Marquand) from Marquand's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Droid supervisor EV-9D9 tortured her fellow droids to the delight of the mercenaries and lowlifes on Jabba the Hutt's barge.

In early drafts of the screenplay for Return of the Jedi, EV-9D9 was originally known as U8-D8 and later EV-8D8 before receiving her final alphanumeric designation in the third draft script. The character was brought to life using a marionette based on droid designs by renowned franchise conceptual designer and illustrator Ralph McQuarrie, constructed by supervising prop maker Bill Hargreaves' team, and given voice in a Hitchcock-style cameo by director Marquand himself, while the name 8D8 was assigned to EV's smelter droid assistant.

McQuarrie is widely considered one of the seminal Star Wars artists, having designed the look of Darth Vader, C-3PO, R2-D2, and countless other elements of the original film. McQuarrie was one of Lucas' first collaborators on Star Wars and created numerous concept sketches and production paintings that were used to convey Lucas' vision to those working on the film, and were later used to market it. McQuarrie's paintings were published in portfolios well-known to Star Wars collectors.

This large printed dyeline depicting EV-9D9 from the rear and right side is dated "18.6.81," labeled "F. Hole" for art director Fred Hole, and titled "Robot U8D8." It exhibits crinkling along its top edge, minor tearing along the sides, and discoloration from age. Dimensions: 36" x 84.5" x 1.5" (91.5 cm x 215 cm x 4 cm)
