Do I even need to comment on these superb chiaroscuro effects?
It's true that neither Red Dust, nor Comanche, nor the horses are actually in the panel... But it remains a perfect example of Hermann's mastery. Beautiful cinematography; we only glimpse the fire, circle around it, but it's undeniably present throughout the entire page. And finally, we see that light at the bottom of the page, right in the center, illuminating the whole panel and all those faces with its power. What light!
In Comanche: The Devil's Finger, Hermann sculpts each scene with strikingly dense black and white. His deep, almost grainy, flat areas of shadow give the ranch, the canyons, and the faces a raw and immediate presence. The slightest crease in clothing, the faintest glint of light on a rifle seems to leap off the page with an almost tactile authenticity.
The stark contrasts heighten the tension of the narrative and establish the dry, dusty atmosphere typical of his westerns. It's a style of drawing that doesn't try to seduce: it commands attention, it tells a story, and it leaves a lasting impression.
