Description
The cave paintings at Lascaux, adorned with primitive animals, inspire a caveman to invent the first calendar. The joke is that it's a Pin-Up calendar featuring a Palaeolithic Pin-Up Girl.
The animals depicted on the cave walls are believed to represent complex, spiritual, or magical rituals rather than simple, everyday hunting scenes. Scholars suggest they depict a shaman's visions, "hunting magic" to ensure survival, but cartoonist Smilby tosses all that out in favor of another basic instinct: sex.
Francis Wilford Smith (Smilby) Diners Club Magazine (Austrian Edition) October 1984 Single Panel Gag Cartoon Illustration Original Art (Diners Club, 1984). "I call it a calendar." Created in ink and watercolor on illustration board. Signed in the lower right of the 9.25" x 11.75" image area. The board is toned, with some foxing and staining in the margins. In Very Good condition.
