Description
A little less than 20 years ago I moved on from heavy comic collecting and became obsessed with comic art. As I moved towards that end of the hobby I focused on oddball bronze-age characters that just seemed fun to me; Man-Thing, Werewolf, Tigra ... etc. As I was constantly looking and getting ideas I ran across one of the rarer characters, The Scarecrow (not to be confused with all the other Scarecrows). He first appeared in the final issues of Dead of Night, and I thought he looked cool and the Rico Rival art looked pretty sweet. I made my mind that it would be fun to hunt down a page from the issue to add to the collection.

I've been looking all this time. I found a page or two online that I didn't even come close to budging it out of a collectors cold, stubborn grasp. I talked to the artist, and I even sparked up an acquaintance with the creator, Scott Edelman who said "Sorry -- don't plan to sell those or any of the other originals I own from stories I wrote unless it's either that or eat dog food". I never asked again.

If you follow me or you're a friend of mine in the hobby, you know this page means a lot to me. I wish that there was an amazing story of how I found the page in an old antique store next to the Mongwai section but there just isn't. A dealer had one, I offered a page in trade and I got it. Happy to put this quest to bed right before it's 20 year anniversary.

Incredible work by Rival! The lighting is wonderful, especially in the third panel, and the final panel composition and the villain's expression are superb. The acquisition might have been mundane, but the story of the hunt was a great read. (I've been looking for one of these myself... but I'd better not ask.)

Good thing he wasn't fighting the Big Bad Wolf.

I had my own annoying encounter with Edleman many years ago, where I even offered to find and trade him TWO nice pages from comics he wrote in exchange for the one he had that would complete a short story I owned. Given that as a writer, he benefited by simply being in the industry during a short lived period in which writers were undeservedly being given art that should rightly have been given back only to the pencillers and inkers, his selfishness really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Anyway, I'm glad to see you finally got one of these babies, and it's a great one!
