Besides his insightful characterizations of American Life, legendary Illustrator Murray Tinkelman's contribution to art history is his unique style. Each work is composed of thousands of tiny cross-hatchings. Meticulously observed and deftly executed with a patient and precise hand, a Tinkelman is a delight to view and study. The closer you get to it, the more you appreciate the artist's brilliant technique, which is instantly recognizable as his own. A comparison could be looking a Pointillist work by Georges Seurat, where on close viewing his painting is composed of a myriad of abstract tiny dots but at a distance viewer's eye and brain "mix" these dots into a fuller range of tones, creating a clearer but vibrant image. Tinkelman departs from Pointillism to create is own unique visual style based only on lines.
