Description

Giant 15.5" X 20.5" watercolor over pencil+ink. Even without knowing who the artist was, I had to buy this painting. I spent a few years of my 20s working for a baseball magazine and a minor league baseball team. As someone who was not a baseball fan before that time, I gained a new appreciation for the players dedication to building their skills, and the game's history.

The paper condition leads me to believe this is at least 40 or 50 years old, maybe older. My guess is it appeared in a magazine in the 70s or 60s, but that's just a guess. I could see it in Sports Illustrated or Playboy or another magazine.

There is an R on the helmet, and the letters on the jerseys may spell "Hawks" but it's difficult to be certain. There appears to be an artist's signature to the left of the catcher's glove, but darned if I can decipher it. For now, I'll list it as "unpublished", but hopefully I'll figure out the mystery of who the artist is and change that.

Good thing I don't need to know who painted this to enjoy it!

No idea on the artist either, but that's a wild and explosive background. It has the feel of a war cover more than a sport one. Interesting contrast of the looseness of the figures in a muted palette, against the explosion of colour behind.

That background emphasizes the intensity of the moment. Perhaps the explosive coloring could be taken as a play on the phrases "he has a bazooka for an arm" or "he really blasted that one".

I may end up giving this one to my son. He's moving to Baltimore soon, is getting into the idea of following baseball, and attended his first MLB game a few days ago (though not in Baltimore.) He said he was going to buy some things to put on his new walls. This can get him started.

Very cool showing a passion for the game by painting this in the abstract style on purpose.  It keeps the players and team a mystery so it can appeal to every fan.

Initially the abstract loosely lined figures threw me off the painting. But the more I looked at it, the more the undefined linework drew me into the pictures. And the colors too.
