Description

This is my first John Byrne piece and it's right out of my youth. That second panel of Iron fist boxing Piledrivers ears is seared in my memory, I flash back on that image every now and then. I had a chance at this page years ago, but back then I didn't have the money for it. Honestly, I didn't have the money for it now, but I knew if I let it slip by me again, I likely wouldn't be able to afford it on its next go around. I broke a rule of mine to get this piece, but as soon as I got it home, I knew I had made the right decision.

Iron Fist is where Byrne cut his teeth, and in my opinion, this issue (issue #11) is where you see his art style fully realized. Body positions are more natural and so is the panel flow, nothing is forced. You can even see the jump in quality from just the previous issue #10 also inked by Dan Adkins.

My first Byrne. I just needed to say that again.

"

How’s youse gonna hurt Piledriver, huh?"  Man!  I love Marvel dialog from that era.  They were so hep with that street jive-talk!

Totally on board with the analysis of John's artwork maturing in this series.  This page is a beautiful example.  Congratulations!!

Very cool!  Byrne made the Crew look very formidable!  This run was where his style took shape and shortly thereafter revolutionized Marvel!

Lots of action plus Misty Knight in that top panel really hits the mark. It certainly is a glimpse on what JB's potential would be.

You are right about some early Byrne pages not looking quite like the style we fell in love with, but the anatomy and lighting on this one really feel right. And I love the action and character content... great page!
