Description

My second detective-themed post this week, after the Alack Sinner page posted earlier.

I've seen Rafael Navarro at numerous shows throughout California over the last few years. At one small show at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, I bought the 25th Anniversary edition of his series, Sonambulo: Sleep of the Just and Rafael graciously drew the character on the title page.

The book features the adventures of the title character, a 1950s luchador and detective. There's a lot to like about Rafael's work and fans of Darwyn Cooke's and sensibilities will find a lot to like about Sonambulo, now available in a 30th Anniversary edition.

The soon-to-open Lucas Museum of Narrative Art evidently admires Navarro's work as well. His painting for the third issue of the Sonambulo series was acquired by the musuem for its collection of comic art. Can't wait to visit and see it in person!

With every piece revealed, we get a sense of the focus and scope of the museum.  You wonder if they will shape tastes as to what makes the cut and what does not?

To some extent, I'm sure. While I'm sure they'll have their Kirby, I'm sure they'll also draw attention to other lesser-known artists.

Pretty sweet looking marker remark, I like how he sort of threaded it in with the title so it feels "connected" as opposed to something obviously after the fact. Almost feels like it was intended to be printed that way even though I know it wasn't. I also caught that video of the piece they were framing of his for the Lucas Museum, very cool to see - only 5 months away from opening!

I can smell the cigarette smoke ... and taste the unseen whiskey.
