Description

Original poster artwork by Brian Bysouth for The Philadelphia Experiment, directed by Stewart Raffill. Bysouth's distinctive artwork was used for the British Quad poster, and this lot comes from the personal collection of Brian Bysouth. The film follows two U.S. Navy sailors who become caught in a secret World War II invisibility experiment aboard the USS Eldridge. When the test goes catastrophically wrong, they are launched forward in time to 1984, where they must uncover the truth behind the experiment while attempting to stop history from repeating itself with even more dangerous consequences. The artwork is painted in gouache on a large illustration board and is signed by Bysouth in metallic pink ink. The piece is overlaid with a protective plastic sheet, to which select cut-out lettering elements for the two taglines have been attached. A paper border is placed over the top, with an attached credits section featuring additional cut-out lettering adhered to black paper. Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Terms and Conditions.

The illustration board shows general signs of wear, particularly along the right side. There is marking on the plastic, and the paper border displays minor paper loss on the bottom edge. Some of the lettering has begun to peels away over time.

Estimate: £800 - 1600

British artist Brian Bysouth (b. 1936) is one of the most celebrated film poster designers of the twentieth century, renowned for his dynamic style that defined an era of cinematic advertising. Trained at art school and beginning his career at the advertising agency Downtons, Bysouth quickly established himself within the film industry, producing artwork for hundreds of posters as well as major advertising campaigns and editorial commissions.

A central figure in the golden age of hand-painted posters, his work captures both the drama and glamour of cinema at its peak.
