Alcala had to show with authenticity that even though the dialogue was between two people, there are others around the same communications center probably to decode messages for a more complex process than what is nomally shown on other mediums.
Always a treat to see Alcala art posted to CAF.

Alcala imparted a sense of motion and individuality to his figures even when they're standing still. You can feel the sonar man in the top panel turning in his chair to give an urgent message for the captain to a fellow sailor. The sailors look like distinct individuals. Even though a dialogue page, it's alive with personality and motion.

He was a really great artist; his historical WWII figures are just perfectly illustrated for the medium.

I was thinking the same thing that Ruben commented. This shines because of the individual looks of each person on the page. Gives it a life that is not present when a lesser artist might draw in more stylized figures!
