As far back as I can remember, I was drawn to war and horror comics. At nine-and-a-half, I was grudgingly allowed to purchase war comics but mystery books were off limits. However, DC's war comics in the summer of 1971 blurred the line between the war and mystery genres. I somehow managed to slip Weird War Tales #1 and this comic past my parents when they were purchasing comics for their four children. Russ was channeling his Atlas pre-code horror with this page, the climax of the story. It was the perfect comic to read by a lantern's light while camping.
