Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

The US is no longer living with piecemeal victories but now stacking up a growing chain. The Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign is underway; the US has recently taken Tarawa (Nov 1943) and is now striking deeper. The Battle of Kwajalein resulted in the first major capture of the Marshall Islands, with a heavily fortified Japanese position falling relatively quickly. The pattern of captures in now fixed in the minds of the US press and public. And the distant, alarmed Japan can only watch.
