Description

1945.08.10 “Out on a limb - PLUS”
by Paul R Carmack (1895-1977)
11.5 x 14.5 in., crayon and ink on board
Coppola Collection

Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

See, as reference, the August 9 cartoon. Hiroshima (Aug 6) had occurred. Nagasaki had occurred (Aug 9 local; news still fragmentary and confusing). The Soviet declaration of war (Aug 8) and invasion of Manchuria was fresh, shocking news. Japan had not yet surrendered; the Imperial decision was still unresolved. Tokyo’s predicament is not accidental; it is the result of accumulated decisions. There is no sense yet of “the atom bomb alone won the war.” War was still an accumulation of its combatants.
